Olympus Pen E-PM1
If you are looking for facts and a detailed overview of the Olympus Pen E-PM1, then you’ve come to the right place.
The new ‘mini’ is the smallest camera available in the 4/3s shooter class. Interestingly, all of Olympus’ M4/3 lenses will work with the E-PM1. Given the quality of these lenses, this is a real benefit.
Another interesting feature of the Olympus ‘mini’ is its 3D photo mode. This enables you to easily take 3D pictures, something you can’t do with most other cameras.
Olympus’ other cameras in this line have proven to be excellent, and partly on that basis, this ‘mini’ version has received high marks from previewers.
But are these high marks warranted? Let’s take a close look at the strengths and weaknesses of the E-PM1 and see if it deserves the praise it has received.

The Nitty Gritty
There is no doubt that, historically, DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras have been the best among digital cameras in terms of picture quality. But they are also usually very expensive and bulky. If you are like most of us, you probably prefer a camera that’s easy to carry around so that it’s handy and easy to use when you’re ready to take pictures.
The problem with nearly all of the compact point-and-shoot varieties (not to mention cell phone cameras) is that they typically take mediocre pictures, even when they’re high megapixel. The Olympus Pen E-PM1 solves that problem. It’s small enough to keep close at hand and works much like a traditional point-and-shoot camera – but thanks to its high quality lens, the Olympus ‘mini’ takes 12.3 megapixel shots comparable to those you can take with pro-quality DSLRs.
Another problem this camera solves is the focus. When you are taking someone’s picture, you want their face to be in focus. Unfortunately, the autofocus in a lot of digital cameras does not correctly center on a person’s face unless you frame it very carefully with that in mind. The E-PM1 utilizes Face Detection Autofocus that automatically centers on your subject’s eyes, assuring that their face will be in focus.
Also in terms of picture quality, the ‘mini’ is equipped with body image stabilization technology, which enables you to take crisp, clear pictures in low light or any other situation. Moreover, Olympus built in its Advanced Shadow Adjustment Technology so that when you take a picture of someone in front of a light background they will not appear too dark.
Fairly often you may want to take pictures in low light. How does the Pen E-PM1 perform in these situations? Using what Olympus calls the “super luminosity AF Illuminator LED beam” to focus much more quickly in low-light situations, you can take excellent shots at night with up to 12,800 iso sensitivity. And for indoor shots, you can choose to use the slide-on flash Olympus includes when you buy the camera.
Many digital cameras have always had trouble with high-speed shots. If, for example, you want to take pictures of your kids playing their favorite sports, most point-and-shoot digital cameras will not allow you to snap successive frames quickly enough to capture all the action, and the shots you do capture will often be blurry. With the PEN E-PM1 you can snap up to 5 shots per second, allowing you to capture those otherwise hard-to-get clear motion sequences. The clarity of your motion shots is possible in part because of Olympus’ “Autofocus Tracking System” that employs thirty five different points of focus.
But what about video? With this camera you can take 1080i high definition videos with what Olympus calls the “direct HD Movie Button”. The camera has the capacity to shoot footage up to 29 minutes long that include Dolby Digital stereo audio. In addition, you can style your videos directly on the camera with any of several special effects (“Air Filters”), such as grainy film and soft focus.

Conclusion
The long and short of it is that Olympus has been in the business of making high-quality cameras for many years. Their digital Pen line of cameras are all very nice units, and the Pen E-PM1 seems to be just as good. It has the advantage over its predecessors of being small, portable, and very easy to use. In other words, it allows you to use it much like you would a simple point-and-shoot digital camera, and yet because of its high-quality lenses in particular, you will take excellent pictures that are just as good as you can take with much larger and more expensive DSLRs. Overall, if you decide to buy the Pen ‘mini’, you will likely be very satisfied.
