Digital Photography Printer

Digital cameras have become the norm. They are popular for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that you can keep and share as many pictures as you like and never worry about your photos degrading or getting lost, destroyed, or damaged. But it is still desirable to have actual physical copies of at least some of your pictures. Moreover, digital display devices can be expensive and inconvenient, so at times you will probably want to display them in traditional frames. With the right printer, you can do this right from your home or office.

Because of this, many companies make printers suited for digital photography printing. There are many digital photography printers on the market, and every company claims theirs is the best. But just because a company claims theirs is the best printer for this purpose doesn’t necessarily make it so. How then do you decide which one best suits your needs and budget? To help you make an informed decision, here are some guidelines you can use:

  • Price – You may believe that price is the best measure of quality. For example, you might think that it stands to reason that the most expensive printer is the best quality, and on the other hand, you may think that there is little enough difference between models that lower price means a better bargain. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Keep in mind that manufacturers often consider customer psychology when determining the best price to ask for their products. They may price an item on the low side in order to boost sales with bargain shoppers. On the other hand, they may ask a high price in order to appeal to your sense that better printers are more expensive. In short, price is at best only a rough barometer for quality.
  • Design – No doubt you have heard it said about food dishes that “it’s all in the presentation”. In other words, aesthetics play a role in our perception of inherent quality. Because of this, you might be tempted to choose a printer based on its design or how attractive it looks. Companies hire designers and artists with this in mind, seeking to appeal to your desire for beauty. But once again, it’s not that simple. Build quality can tell you something about the actual quality of a printer, but by itself it is simply not enough to be a true indicator of quality. Design can tell you something about functionality, however. So it’s best not to discount design considerations altogether, but rather to incorporate design as part of how you choose the right printer.
  • Features – It is easy to be seduced by printers that seem to do it all. After all, it is nice to have to buy fewer devices to accomplish the things you need to. It simplifies things and can save you work. Indeed, many modern digital photography printers are heavily packed with features, so many, in fact, that you almost expect them to be able to clean your house. Nevertheless, it can sometimes benefit you more to have fewer features. The phrase “jack of all trades, master of none” can apply as much to a printer for your digital pictures as much as it does to people. A printer that is more specialized as a digital picture printer will often produce far better quality prints than an all-in-one printer. So which way you go will depend on how serious you are about your picture prints.
  • Camera Quality – If you have a simple point-and-shoot digital camera, since these take mediocre pictures at best, there is little reason for you to choose a high-quality printer. By the same token, if you have a high-quality digital camera like the Olympus Pen E-PM1 that takes excellent pictures, you would likely be better off if you buy a high-quality printer for your digital pictures.

Overall, it’s best to think carefully when you are ready to buy a printer that you will use for digital photography printing. In particular, you should give careful thought to whether or not you are serious about having high-quality picture prints. If you are, you might well be better served by a printer that does this especially well at the expense of other functionality.

On the other hand, if you simply want quick and dirty printouts and would also like to use your printer for other purposes, an all-in-one device might better suit you. In any case, educate yourself about the actual capabilities and particulars of all the printers you consider, and don’t be hypnotized by their appearance or fooled into thinking price tells you everything you need to know.
