Why Choose Digital Photography?
Nowadays digital photography is the norm, particularly since pocket-sized point-and-shoot models are available, cellphones and other mobile devices have cameras, and most people at least have access to a computer. In addition to the convenience of digital cameras and picture management, the quality has improved to the point that it compares favorably to film photography.
Nevertheless, a few people continue to use film photography. If you have not switched yet from film to digital, here are some good reasons why you should:
- Convenience. With the abundance of point-and-shoot varieties on the market, some of which take pictures that are every bit as good as high-quality SLRs, you can easily keep a camera with you for all those unexpected and spontaneous photo ops.
- Less Time and Effort. Nearly all digital cameras allow you to review photos you just took, allowing you to decide right then and there if you want to retake them. In other words, no need for wasteful “safety shots”.
- Print Only What You Want. You can either use your own printer to print any pictures you’d like to have physical copies of, or go to Walgreens, Kinkos, or any of many other vendors and pay only for the prints you want.
- Endless Sharing. Since you can make as many copies of digital pictures as you’d like, you can share as many copies of any pictures you want at no extra charge. Email them as attachments, upload them to Flickr or Facebook, burn them to a disc, text them, or copy them to a pen drive.
- Ease of Editing. Software you can use to edit your pictures however you’d like is ready available, and much of it is completely free. So you can edit out red-eye, render a shot in black and white, add captions, make a collage, and many, many other possibilities – all on your own computer and while retaining the unmodified original.
- Promote Your Business. You can print pictures onto business cards, brochures, newsletters, letterhead, or any other business documentation you need. And you can easily do this yourself with free software tools.
- Permanence. You can make as many backup copies of your pictures as you’d like, organized into labeled folders if you want, and thereby assure that you will never lose them. Conventional chemical photographs can degrade, be physically lost, or destroyed by fire, water, and many other things. Once they’re gone, they’re gone forever.
This list of the advantages of digital photography over film photography is by no means comprehensive. It does, however, give you an idea of what you gain when you switch from film to digital.
